51. East Of The Sun (1934)

lyrics and music by Brooks Bowman

rec date type # discography tk rec time
1952 MT 219 Complete on Verve v.1 18 2’54”

East of the sun and west of the moon
We’ll build a dream house of love, dear
Near to the sun in the day
Near to the moon at night
We’ll live in a lovely way, dear
Living our love in the pale moonlight
Just you and I forever and a day
Love will not die we’ll keep it that way
Up among the stars we’ll find
A harmony of life too lovely tune
East of the sun and west of the moon, dear
East of the sun and west of the moon

(bridge)

Just you and I forever and a day
Love will not die we’ll keep it that way
Up among the stars we’ll find
A harmony of life too lovely tune
East of the sun and west of the moon, dear
East of the sun and west of the moon

lyrics: Leo Robin
music: Ralph Rainger

Follows 2 versions of the lyrics

rec date type # discography tk rec time
1937 MT 61 Complete on Columbia v.3 13 3’01”

Living for you is easy living
It’s easy to live when you’re in love
And I’m so in love
There is nothing in life but you

I never regret the years that I’m giving
They’re easy to give when you’re in love
I’m happy to do whatever I do for you,

For you

Maybe I’m a fool but it’s fun
People say you rule me with one wave of your hand
Darling it’s grand
They just don’t understand

Living for you is easy living
It’s easy to live when you’re in love
And I’m so in love
There’s nothing in life but you

Easy Living – 2nd version

There is nothing in life but you

I’ll never regret the things I’m giving
They’re easy to give when you’re in love
I’m happy to do whatever I do for you

For you maybe I’m a fool
But it’s fun
People say you rule me with one
Wave of your hand
Darling it’s grand
They just don’t understand

Living for you is easy living
It’s easy to live when you’re in love
And I’m so in love
There’s nothing in life but you

For you maybe I’m a fool
But it’s fun
People say you rule me with one
Wave of your hand
Baby it’s grand

54. Eeny Meeny Miney Mo

Lyrics by Johnny Mercer

Music by Matty Malneck

rec date type # discography tk rec time
1935 MT 12 Complete on Columbia v.1 12 3’12”

Eeny meeny miney mo
Catch your troubles by the toe
If it hollers let it go
Let it fly away
Eeny meeny miney mo
It’s the saying high and low
Hear it everywhere you go
Any time of day
Big Ben rings it
Vallee sings it
Whitewood swings it
Even Mr. Crosby bings it
Eeny meeny miney mo
Catch your troubles by the toe
If it hollers let it go
Let it fly away

56. Everybody’s Laughing

Sammy Lerner & Ben Oakland

rec date type # discography tk rec time
1938 MT 96 Complete on Columbia v.5 1 3’02”

Everybody’s laughing
Yes everybody’s laughing
They know that you and I are through
And everybody’s laughing
I told the world you loved me
And bragged about it proudly
But since they know it’s over
They’re laughing at me loudly

People love to linger
So they can point a finger
And tear apart a gal whose heart
Was taken through the wringer
If we could start all over
The laugh might be on them
But meanwhile
Everybody’s laughing

(bridge)

It we could start all over
The laugh might be on them
But meanwhile
Everybody’s laughing

57. Everything Happens For The Best

Billie Holiday & T. Smith

rec date type # discography tk rec time
1939 MT 114 Complete on Columbia v.5 19 2’47”

Always blue all in a mist
It’s plain as can be
You’re so mean to me
But everything happens for the best
You always play around
You’re running my heart so deep in the ground
That’s O.K. it happens for the best

I loved you so madly
Knew you would be true
Now this thing has happened dear
It’s over all over because we’re through
Sorry dear it end this way
Since the world begin
The old folks say
Everything happens for the best

(bridge)

58. Everything Happens To Me (1941)

lyrics by Tom Adair

music by Matt Dennis

rec date type # discography tk rec time
1955 MT 254 Complete on Verve v.3 16 6’20”

Black cats creep across my path
Until I’m almost mad
I must have ‘roused the devil’s wrath
‘Cause all my luck is bad

I make a date for golf
And you can bet your life it rains
I try to give a party
And the guy upstairs complains
I guess I’ll go through life
Just catching colds and missing planes
Everything happens to me

I never miss a thing
I’ve had the measles and the mumps
And every time I play an ace
My partner always trumps
I guess I’m just a girl
Who never looks before she jumps
Everything happens to me

At first my heart thought
You could break this jinx for me
That love would turn the trick and end despair
But now I just can’t fool
This head that thinks for me
I’ve mortgaged all my castles in the air

I’ve telegraphed and phoned
I send an Airmail Special too
Your answer was good-bye
And there was even postage due
I fell in love just once
And then it had to be with you
Everything happens to me

(long bridge)

At first my heart thought
You could break this jinx for me
That love would turn the trick to end despair
But now I just can’t fool
This head that thinks for me
I’ve mortgaged all my castles in the air

I’ve telegraphed and phoned
I send an Airmail Special too
Your answer was good-bye
And there was even postage due
I fell in love just once
And then it had to be with you
Everything happens to me

Notes

It was first recorded by the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra featuring Frank Sinatra. Unusually, the song focused on Sinatra’s vocal, with no trombone solo by Dorsey. Years later, Sinatra rerecorded the song with the Hollywood String Quartet; this version was featured on his 1957 album Close to You (Wikipedia).
